Unit six. Lesson seven.

Exercise two, A.

When I think about China, a few things usually come to mind: busy cities, rich history, and some marvelous landscapes. But one aspect that really stood out during my travels there was the variety of climates across this vast country. From icy mountains to tropical beaches, China offers a dizzying array of weather experiences.

Let me take you through my first-hand experience with China's climate.

Starting in Beijing, the capital, I was greeted by a dry, chilly winter. The air was biting, and the famous Great Wall was surprisingly beautiful, covered in snow. I enjoyed breathtaking views while walking along this historic marvel. There's something magical about Beijing in winter, but let's not sugarcoat it.

I quickly learned that wearing layers is a must. I was freezing one minute, then feeling unbearably hot in heavy clothing the next.

Then I headed south to Guangzhou, where the climate was completely different. The moment I stepped off the plane, I was hit by a wave of warmth and humidity. The air felt sticky, and I found myself longing for, wanted, a cool breeze. But the rich greenery surrounding me made it worth it. I noticed how the weather shapes not just the environment, but also the culture.

In Guangzhou, street vendors were everywhere, selling delicious bowls of hot noodles, perfect food for the humid air.

Next up was Chengdu, famous for its spicy cuisine and, of course, its lovely pandas. Here, I got to experience the rainy season. It was like a scene out of a movie, with mist rolling over the hills and the gentle sound of rain on the rooftops. The panda reserve was surrounded by a soft, beautiful landscape.

As I went further west to the Tibetan Plateau, the climate changed again. High altitude meant much cooler temperatures. And sunny days felt comforting until you realized how quickly it could turn chilly once the sun set behind the mountains. I enjoyed the picturesque views of majestic peaks and peaceful lakes. This area's weather reminded me to always be prepared. The breathtaking beauty came with its own challenges.

Finally, I spent a few days by the coastline in Sanya on Hainan Island, where I found myself in paradise. This was the tropical escape I had been longing for. With sunlit beaches and a soft sea breeze, it was hard to believe I was still in China. The contrast was striking: while other parts of the country were freezing or rainy, here it was all about beach umbrellas, fresh coconut water, and lazy afternoons filled with sunshine. Without question, it was a lovely way to end my journey.

My travels across China opened my eyes to the extreme diversity of its climate. Each region has its own character shaped by the weather. Cultural aspects, food, and local experiences are all influenced by it. Climate isn't just weather; it's the very fabric of daily life. I know I'll always remember the diverse climates that make this country extraordinary.
