Unit six, lesson one.

Exercise four, A.

Belarus.

Belarus has a humid continental climate with four distinct seasons and a sharp contrast between severe winters and warm summers. The average annual temperature is five point eight degrees Celsius. Average monthly temperatures vary by twenty-four degrees, ranging from minus six degrees Celsius on average in January to eighteen degrees Celsius in summer. Belarus has average annual precipitation, rain and snow, of five hundred and fifty to seven hundred millimeters, spread evenly throughout all months. The average number of sunlight hours in Minsk is one thousand eight hundred and fifteen out of four thousand three hundred and eighty-three possible. It means that it is sunny forty-one point four percent of daylight hours. The remaining fifty-eight point six percent of daylight hours are cloudy, foggy, or misty, mostly from October to March. In general, there are no significant differences between the districts of Belarus due to the small size of the country. The climate is influenced by the country's inland location, the domination of a flat landscape, and its relative remoteness from the Atlantic Ocean.

China.

Because of its vast size and diverse geography, China's climate is remarkably varied. If there is a general climate, it is temperate, but it is also tropical in Hainan and arid in the Taklamakan Desert, Xinjiang region, Western China. In the north and northeast, the climate is temperate with very cold winters and mild summers. In the south, it is subtropical with very hot summers and mild winters. The temperatures range from about fifty degrees Celsius during summer in the south to about minus fifty degrees Celsius in the tundra regions in winter, with many different temperatures in between.

Singapore.

Singapore is an island city-state near the southern end of the Malay peninsula in Southeast Asia. Located just one degree north of the Equator, it experiences little variety in temperature and does not have distinct seasons like summer or winter. Singapore has a tropical rainforest climate, characterized by warm and humid conditions throughout the year. Average temperatures range from about twenty-five degrees Celsius at night to thirty-one degrees Celsius during the day. The humidity level is typically high, which is around eighty percent on average. Singapore experiences heavy rainfall, and the wettest months are usually from November to January due to the northeast monsoon. Thunderstorms accompanied by rain showers are common in the country. Due to its geographical location, the region experiences light winds and atmospheric pressure remains relatively stable. Despite the regular rainfall, the sun frequently shines and creates marvelous green landscapes in the city-state.

4a.Listen and read more about the climates of these countries. Compare the information with your descriptions. Whose description fits best?

In my opinion, my classmate's description of Belarus fits best because he accurately described our four distinct seasons and snowy winters. Regarding China and Singapore, our initial descriptions were too general, but the texts helped us understand how diverse China is and how humid and warm Singapore stays all year round.

4b.Read again and answer: What new facts have you learnt about the climates of Belarus, China, and Singapore?

I have learnt several surprising and interesting facts about each country:

  • Belarus: I didn't know that it is sunny for only about 41.4% of daylight hours in Minsk, and that the remaining 58.6% of the time is cloudy, foggy, or misty. Also, the average annual temperature is quite low — just 5.8 °C.
  • China: It was fascinating to discover that China has an incredible temperature contrast: from −50 °C in the northern tundra in winter to 50 °C in the south during summer. I also learned that it combines arid deserts like the Taklamakan and tropical islands like Hainan.
  • Singapore: I was surprised to learn that Singapore has no distinct seasons like summer or winter because it is located just one degree north of the equator. The temperature rarely changes, staying between 25 °C and 31 °C, and the average humidity is very high — around 80%.

4c.Which of the climates would you enjoy? Which climates would you like to experience?

I really enjoy the humid continental climate of Belarus because I love the change of seasons. It is wonderful to experience snowy winters with sledging and skiing, fresh springs, warm summers, and colorful autumns. Living in a place where the weather never changes might get boring.

However, I would really like to experience the tropical rainforest climate of Singapore for a week or two. It would be amazing to feel tropical rain showers, see exotic evergreen nature, and enjoy warm evenings without ever needing a warm winter jacket.
