Unit six, lesson three.

Exercise two A.

From late June to late August twenty ten, Russia suffered from one of the worst heatwaves in world history, called the Great Russian Heatwave.

In July, temperatures in Moscow rose to thirty-nine degrees Celsius and broke records in other Asian and European territories of Russia.

The impacts were catastrophic.

This extremely hot and dry long-lasting weather caused wildfires, which destroyed about two hundred thousand hectares of forests and peat fields.

The heat and lack of rain for two months destroyed grain crops in twenty-eight regions.

The heat, smoke and smog, as a result of wildfires around Moscow and in other regions, caused health problems to thousands of people and even human loss.

In twenty twenty-four, India suffered from severe floods, which occurred during the rainy season in summer.

Intense monsoon rains struck many states.

Sweeping through villages and cities, the floods caused widespread destruction and led to the evacuation of over sixty-five thousand residents.

Many roads were destroyed and bridges washed away, thus causing widespread infrastructure damage and travel disruptions.

The floods also had a disastrous impact on agriculture, ruining crops.

In Kerala, landslides killed four hundred twenty people, while in Assam, the Brahmaputra River flooded Kaziranga National Park and killed over two hundred animals.

The extreme weather events disrupted daily life and caused a lot of damage.

In the first week of February twenty twenty-four, prolonged extreme weather swept through the provinces of Henan, Hubei, Anhui, Jiangsu, Guangdong, and Shandong.

This caused a lot of disruptions and led to the shutdown of highway toll stations because of deep snow.

The regions experienced heavy snowfall, even blizzards, with gusty winds of about fifty kilometers per hour, freezing rain, dense fog, and low temperatures.

The weather conditions had a negative impact on transportation.

Hundreds of flights and train services were canceled, and motorists were stranded on snowy roads.

In one of the regions, there were thirteen injured and one killed because a house roof collapsed.

Local authorities actively took measures to cope with the situation and avoid more injuries.

The extreme weather disrupted the Lunar New Year travel rush, when millions of Chinese city workers travel home for the celebration, also called the Spring Festival.

As you see, extreme weather events can have negative impacts and cause a lot of damage, destruction, injuries and even human loss in different climates and on all continents of the Earth.
