Unit four, lesson nine, exercise one A.

A dress for the moon.

After Indira Krishnan.

Once upon a time. A young man named Madden, lived in a village in Northern India.

Madden's father wanted his son to stay in the village and be a farmer, but Madden went to town and learned to be a tailor.

Madden worked hard and soon became known for the fine clothes he made.

Everyone in town wanted clothes made by Madden. The more dresses he made, the prouder and more boastful he became.

One night, Madden was looking at the full moon above a tall coconut tree.

Madden said, I am sure I can make a dress for the moon. The moon will like my work, and then the sun and stars will want me to make dresses for them.

The coconut tree heard those words, laughing softly. The tree bent down and whispered:

Coconut Tree: That's one thing you can't do.

Madden didn't like those words.

Madden: How do you know what I can do? You are only a tree.

The tree tried to say more, but Madden would not listen.

Madden: Tell the moon that I want to make a dress for her.

The coconut tree did so.

Moon: Oh, sure. I want a dress made by the famous tailor from Earth.

Madden was excited. He bought the finest white silk and started to make a dress for his very important client.

In two weeks, when the dress was ready, Madden asked the coconut tree to give it to the moon.

The coconut tree did so. The next evening, the moon didn't come out in her new dress.

The coconut tree bent down and whispered:

Coconut Tree: The moon says your dress doesn't fit, it's too loose.

Madden was shocked.

Madden: No, it can't be true. The clothes I make always fit perfectly.

The moon gave the dress back to Madden and asked the tailor to make the dress smaller.

Madden worked for a week fitting the dress. He wanted it to fit his client perfectly.

The next evening, the moon rose a little later. She wasn't wearing her new dress.

The coconut tree bent down and whispered:

Coconut Tree: The dress is too tight.

Madden couldn't believe that.

Madden: How could I go wrong?

Coconut Tree: I tried to tell you before, but you didn't listen.

Coconut Tree: I've seen for many years that after the moon is full, she grows smaller each day until you can't see her at all. Then she starts growing bigger day after day until she gets full.

Coconut Tree: So how can a tailor make one dress that would fit the moon perfectly?

Broken-hearted, Madden looked at the moon and whispered:

Madden: I am sorry, dear moon. I am not as great a tailor as I thought.

Moon: It's all right. After all, I'm the moon. How can I wear clothes which people make for people?

From that day on, Madden worked harder than before.

People liked him even better because he was an excellent tailor and a humble one too.

Exercise 1a

1.Is it a fiction or a non-fiction story?
It is a fiction story.

2.Is it prose or poetry?
It is written in prose.

3.Is it a description or a narration?
It is a narration.

4.Is it a fairy tale, a story, or a legend?
It is a fairy tale (or a folk story).

5.Who are the characters?
The characters are Madan, the coconut tree, and the Moon.

6.Can Madan make a dress for the moon?
No, he can't, because the Moon changes its shape and size all the time.

Exercise 1b

1.Why did Madan want to make a dress for the moon?
He became too proud and boastful. He thought that if the Moon liked his work, the Sun and the stars would also order dresses from him.

2.Why did the coconut tree say, "That's one thing you can't do"?
The tree knew that the Moon changes its size every single day, so one dress could never fit her.

3.Why didn't the moon put on the dress when Madan first made it?
Because the dress was too loose for her.

4.Why didn't she put it on after Madan had fitted it?
Because by that time the dress had become too tight.

5.Why did the greatest tailor on Earth get the moon's size wrong?
He didn't know the laws of nature and forgot about the phases of the Moon, growing and shrinking constantly.

6.Why wasn't the moon very upset about not getting a new dress?
She understood that she is a celestial body, so she cannot wear clothes made by people for humans.

7.What lesson did Madan learn?
He learned to be humble, not to boast, and to listen to wise advice from others.

Exercise 1c

1.What parts of the story could happen in real life and what parts are fiction?
A boy becoming a skilled tailor and getting proud can happen in real life. However, talking trees, sewing a dress for the Moon, and celestial bodies speaking are pure fiction.

2.What lessons can we learn from the story?
This story teaches us that pride comes before a fall. We should always remain modest, no matter how successful we are, and never ignore good advice.
