Unit Six. Lesson Five.

Exercises Two A to C.

Speaker 1: Can you tell us, Cyril, how many seasons there are in Russia?

Speaker 2: All regions have four distinct seasons, but in the west, the seasons differ more from each other than in the south.

Speaker 1: Yes, I see. And what kind of summer weather does the country experience?

Speaker 2: Look at the map and be attentive. Summer weather is different in different parts of the country. In central regions like Moscow, summers are warm with average temperatures of twenty, twenty-five degrees Celsius, often with sunny days and occasional rain.

In Siberia, summers can be surprisingly warm too, reaching up to thirty degrees Celsius. Sunny intervals are sometimes followed by thunderstorms because of the heat. However, in the far north, like in Murmansk, summer is much cooler. Day temperatures range from sixteen to twenty-one degrees Celsius and rarely rise above twenty-two degrees Celsius, even during the hottest months. It can be cloudy, and it often rains.

Speaker 1: A really varied picture. And what are the hottest months?

Speaker 2: I would say, the hottest months are July and August. These months typically see the highest temperatures across the country.

Speaker 1: It's useful to know if you're planning a holiday in Russia. A lot of people can't stand boiling hot weather.

Speaker 2: Yes, right. For some people, it is better to travel in early autumn.

Speaker 1: Is the weather rainy and dull in autumn?

Speaker 2: First, I cannot say it is always rainy. Second, it varies by region. In Moscow and Saint Petersburg, September can be quite pleasant with mild temperatures around fifteen, twenty degrees Celsius and beautiful autumn leaves on trees. However, by October and November, it gets rainier and chillier.

In southern regions like Sochi, autumn is much milder and sunnier with temperatures ranging from twenty to twenty-five degrees Celsius, perfect for late holidays.

Speaker 1: That's interesting.

Unit six, lesson five.

Exercises two B, two C.

Interviewer: And when does winter arrive?

Speaker: At very different times. It depends on the region where you are. In Siberia, winter can begin as early as October, with temperatures dropping below freezing and heavy snowfall. In Moscow, it usually starts in late November or early December, with temperatures between minus ten and minus twenty degrees Celsius. And it often snows.

Speaker: In the far south, such as Krasnodar, winter is very mild and short, with temperatures often staying above freezing.

Interviewer: What's the weather like in winter?

Speaker: Varied.

Speaker: In the north, like in Yakutsk, winters are extremely cold. Temperatures drop to minus forty degrees Celsius and below. The days are frosty with a clear sky.

Speaker: In Central Russia, like Moscow, temperatures range from minus ten to minus twenty degrees Celsius, with frequent snowfalls and some sunny days.

Speaker: In Sochi, winter is much milder, often staying above freezing with occasional rain, but rarely any snow.

Speaker: The Far East, such as Vladivostok, experiences cold, dry winters with temperatures around minus fifteen degrees Celsius and strong winds.

Interviewer: I see. Travelers have a choice between extremely cold and mild winters. When does spring begin?

Speaker: Spring arrives in March in southern regions like Sochi and Krasnodar, bringing mild and pleasant weather with temperatures around ten, fifteen degrees Celsius and plenty of sunshine.

Speaker: In central regions like Moscow, spring typically starts in April.

Speaker: Temperatures gradually rise to ten, fifteen degrees Celsius and snow melts, making way for rain and sunny days.

Speaker: In the northern parts, like Murmansk, spring is late. It often begins in May, and even then, it can still be quite chilly, and temperatures are around five, ten degrees Celsius.

Speaker: In the Far East, such as Vladivostok, spring also starts around April, bringing cool temperatures from zero to ten degrees Celsius and a mix of sunny and cloudy days, rain and snow.

Interviewer: Thank you, Kirill, for your detailed answers.
