Unit five.

Lesson four.

Exercise 2 A.

A.

Weather occurs, happens in the atmosphere or in the air between the Earth's surface and space.

The atmosphere consists, is made up of a few layers.

Usually weather occurs in the layer closest to the Earth.

And only big storms can occur in the next layer of the atmosphere.

B.

The simplest explanation of weather is that it is the state of the atmosphere at a definite time and in a definite place on the Earth.

This state is influenced by a few atmospheric factors such as air pressure, temperature, humidity, precipitation and cloud cover.

C.

Temperature is how hot or cold the air is, and it is measured in degrees Celsius or Fahrenheit.

D.

Atmospheric pressure is the weight of the air pressing down on the Earth's surface and on everybody and everything on the Earth's surface.

On weather maps, pressure is shown with lines called isobars.

High and low pressure areas are marked with H or L.

E.

The air is never dry, it is humid.

It contains water vapor which is a gas.

It gets into the air because the sun heats the Earth's surface and the water on it evaporates.

Humidity shows how much moisture there is in the air.

Weather forecasts give relative humidity as a percentage.

For example, fifty percent humidity means that the air is holding only half of the amount of water vapor it can hold at this temperature.

Warm air can hold more water vapor than cold air.

F.

Precipitation is the term given to moisture that falls from the air to the ground.

The most common form of precipitation is rain, snow, hail, sleet, drizzle, fog, mist.

G.

The key player in weather formation is the sun.

It heats the Earth's surface and the air near it unevenly depending on the location of a certain place.

Its landscape, closeness to water bodies, such as oceans, seas, rivers and lakes, the season and time of day.

When the heated warm air rises, it creates low pressure areas with unstable weather, cloudy skies and precipitation.

Cold air is heavier than warm air, so it falls, creating high pressure areas and bringing dry, clear weather.

The air always moves from high to low pressure areas vertically and horizontally, bringing winds.

H.

When the humid warm air rises high above the Earth's surface, where it is extremely cold, the water vapor condenses, turns into small water droplets which grow bigger and form clouds.

In summer, when the clouds become full of water droplets and cannot hold them any longer, the water droplets fall to the ground as rain.

In winter, when the air is very cold, the water in the clouds freezes, forms snowflakes and it snows.

This is how weather works from day to day, giving us varied life experience, making us feel happy or sad, relaxed or excited, full of beans or under the weather.

2.Work with the information from the “Weather-Wise Magazine” paragraph by paragraph in the following order:
Работайте с информацией из журнала «Понимающий погоду» абзац за абзацем в следующем порядке:

Задание A

A. Listen and read along. Say if it answers any of the researcher's questions (ex. 1a). Ask your classmates the meaning of the words you do not remember (but not the words in bold).

Yes, this text answers the main questions about weather: what weather is, where it occurs, what factors influence it, how clouds and winds form, and why it rains or snows.

B. Read aloud together with the class and guess the meaning of the words in bold. Check with the class.

C. Look through the text of the paragraph again and find the key sentence. Compare with the class and write it down in your exercise book.

Paragraph A: Weather occurs (happens) in the atmosphere, or in the air between the Earth’s surface and space.

Paragraph B: The simplest explanation of weather is that it is the state of the atmosphere at a definite time and in a definite place on the Earth.

Paragraph C: Temperature is how hot or cold the air is, and it is measured in degrees Celsius or Fahrenheit.

Paragraph D: Atmospheric pressure is the weight of the air pressing down on the Earth’s surface and on everybody and everything on the Earth’s surface.

Paragraph E: Humidity shows how much moisture there is in the air.

Paragraph F: Precipitation is the term given to moisture that falls from the air to the ground.
