2. a. Can you identify three Minsk parks? What do you know about the parks?

Parks are genuine attractions for people living in large cities. They are full of hustle and bustle, which means very hectic, in all seasons, especially on holidays and celebrations, and they are quiet magnets attracting both young and old people who want to stay in the comfort of nature and their thoughts. The parks are so spacious that there is plenty of room for everybody who has a desire to attend them.

This park was opened in 1945 in honour of the victory over Germany in the Great Patriotic War. The territory of the park occupied 100 hectares.

In 1985, on the occasion of the 40^th anniversary of the Victory, monument “Minsk – Hero City” was erected at the main entrance.

In 2005, the State Committee made 4a decision about a major renovation of the park.

In 2008–2011, the rescue station was rebuilt, embankments were paved, several fountains were erected, the Novy Nesvizh motor ship began to run on the lake. A waterside, a fort, a river lighthouse, sofas, cabins, and showers were installed on the renovated beach.

In 2011, after the completion of all construction work, the park was reopened. Its territory expanded to 200 hectares, only 40 of them are occupied by Komsomolskoye lake.

On 20 September 2013, the park was named the Victory Museum and Park complex.

This park was opened in May 1932 as a Central park of culture and recreation. The name was given in 1934 in honour of the members of the expedition on a steamer.

Previously, on the site of the park there was a forest called “Komarovsky forest”, therefore the park was called “Komarovsky park” at first. In the 1920s and 1930s, it was the site of Stalinist repressions. Today, the park covers 78 hectares (56 hectares when created). The park has various rides, a summer stage, a dance floor, and a go-cart track.

In 1952, the Raduga summer cinema was opened in the park. It was demolished during the renovation of the park in the early 1990s, though architect Georgy Sysoev received an award for the “Rainbow” at the All-Union review of creative works of young authors.

In 1974, the attractions were replaced, including the first roller coaster in the BSSR (“Super-8”). In 2009, these rides were demolished, and modern ones took their place.

In the north-eastern part of the park there is a mass grave of the Soviet Army soldiers, underground workers and civilians who were killed by the Nazi invaders in 1941–1944. In 1955, tombstones and a monument were installed on the graves.
