2. a. Immigrants from Eastern Europe have influenced American culture and science enormously. Work in pairs. Make your speculations about the people in the table their origins, professions, achievements.

Example: I think I know who Isaac Asimov was. He couldn't be Russian, he must've been of Jewish origin as his name was Isaac. He must have been a very popular science-fiction writer because my dad has a lot of his books in our home library.

b. Read the biographical facts and see if your guesses were correct. Match the names with the facts. Who was the person you knew the most about? Whose names did you come across only today?

Example: 1. Isaac Asimov – h).

a) a Ukrainian-born aircraft designer, the world's first helicopter inventor; emigrated to the US after the Revolution in Russia in 1917;

b) a Russian poet and essayist; was expelled from the Soviet Union in 1972; taught at US universities (Yale, Cambridge, Michigan); was awarded the 1987 Nobel Prize in Literature;

c) a Russian-born outstanding composer, pianist and conductor;

d) a Ukrainian-born model, actress, musician, and fashion designer;

e) an American born to former Belarusian parents; a promising player of NHL (National Hockey League);

f) a Russian-born inventor and engineer responsible for many advances in radio, television and the electron microscope;

g) a Russian-born computer scientist, entrepreneur, co-founder of Google; the fourth-youngest billionaire in the world;

h) a Russian-born professor of biochemistry and writer (over 500 books and 9,000 letters and postcards).

c. Work in pairs. Speak about how East-Western culture and science would be different if the people from ex. 2a and many others had never left their motherland.

Immigrate – come into a country because you want to live there.

Emigrate – leave your country in order to live in another country.

Example: If Vladimir Zworykin hadn't emigrated to the USA, the USSR might have been responsible for many achievements in development of television as well as radio and the electron microscope.
